The Springfield Commonwealth Academy campus was founded a century ago in Springfield Massachusetts under the MacDuffie name. Ever since then, we have been dedicated to offer the best high-quality education for students preparing for their college endeavors and beyond.

Years of history and education

Founded in 1890 by John and Abigail MacDuffie, the two were passionate about providing a comprehensive, high-quality education for young women that was experienced by the MacDuffies in their time at Harvard University and Radcliffe College. As a dedicated suffragist and civil rights advocate, Abigail MacDuffie cultivated a sense of curiosity about the environment, equality, and progressive ideals that remain firmly at the school’s core today.

In 1990, the year of the MacDuffie continental, the school officially became co-educational as their previous boarding program was refurbished into a boarding program for primarily international students. In addition, the school added a sixth-grade level for full integration of their middle school curriculum by the guidance of Head Michael L. Cornog. (1988-1999)

Today, Springfield Commonwealth Academy sits proudly in the welcoming, diversity community of Springfield Massachusetts. Our history greatly reflects our commitment to progress, curiosity, and innovation as part of who we are.
